Got us started on SushiDespite the serious doubts of my Japanese colleague ("Your wife's gonna be pi**ed"), this was a hit as a Christmas gift. It got us started on our own sushi-making journey, and that is exactly what it was supposed to do. Several other reviewers are correct that you can get the ingredients cheaper if you shop around, but this is a nice box, the ingredients work and taste well, and it gets you started with no fuss.A few hints from using it:- put the bamboo mat in a large ziploc for easy cleanup- just cook rice normally (at the lower end of the recommended amount of water), and then mix in the vinegar. The rice-cooking method described in the included booklet seems somewhat too complicated.- we also got the Sushezi sushi maker, and the combo is hard to beat4It will work.To get started with making sushi at home - it's a good starter kit. Disappointed that the kit didn't contain chopsticks, but I knew that when I ordered it - just wish it did. Haven't made the sushi yet to speak to the quality of the foods included and the sushi cookbook is really basic - could get more information from a good google search.4A good introduction to sushi!Despite my niece telling me that what we make with this kit would "never taste like restaurant sushi," we had tremendous fun and made some absolutely delicious California rolls, according to my whole family! Sushi-making is not for the faint of heart...or those who have a short attention span....as it takes some reading and study to make the rice (cook over this heat, lower to this heat, let sit for xxx minutes, cool quickly by fanning for xx minutes, etc.) properly. It is also labor-intensive to prepare all the fillings if you want a variety of rolls (we had shrimp, lobster product, crab product, salmon, and even homemade chicken salad). But in the long run, we had such fun and were so proud of the finished rolls displayed on the plates with the side of ginger that it was most definitely worth it.One tip: make sure you have a really, really sharp knife, and that you clean it with a wet cloth between slices--you'll be glad you did!I have some criticism of the book which could be more organized, explain steps much better, and, in fact, it would be wonderful if the kit included a CD of how to make the different types of sushi, since it is somewhat complicated. For this reasonm, I would definitely recommend that a beginner find a video on YouTube that shows how the make sushi--very helpful. One other criticism is that I think the kit should include more than just 10 sheets of nori. Half the bag of sushi rice was just about right for making 10 california rolls, so now I have another half bag rice left (and of course plenty of ginger and the condiments).4Nice kit, a bit unclear thoughI enjoyed this sushi kit overall, but there are a few things I wish were a little different. The first thing I didn't like was that the wasabi was in powder form and you had to mix it with equal parts water to form a paste. For a first time sushi maker like myself, it's a daunting task and then add making the wasabi to the list. Also, the wasabi tasted nothing like the real thing. The second thing I did not like was I didn't see anywhere that explains the difference between the sushi vinegar and the rice vinegar. I had to guess that I was putting the right one on the rice. I also didnt like that the nori came folded up, because when it came time to put the rice on the nori, I had to have someone hold the nori down because it kept folding up on me.A few things I did like however, were that it came with a simple, easy to use sushi guide. It was nice that it explained exactly how to prepare the rice. I also enjoy that the packaging is a nice, black box because I can put the stuff back in it, and put it in my cupboard so I have all my sushi making stuff in one spot. Overall, I give this kit a 3 out of 5.3Pretty good introduction to sushi makingMy wife and I got this product because we had no idea how to make sushi. We love to eat it and knew it would be fun to do at home, but had no clue where to start. This package really had everything we needed to start, and very thorough instructions. I guess the bamboo mat and spoon (?) are good quality--I really have nothing to compare it to.All that being said, like most starter kits, you are paying extra for the convenience of having everything packaged together. Now that we know the basic ingredients necessary for sushi, we have been ordering those individually and saving a few bucks. But if you don't know where to start, the step-by-step instructions and clearly labeled products make this starter kit worth the price. And really, you'd probably spend way more than this at a restaurant for this much sushi.4Good kit for beginnersIt's a good kit for beginners. I found some useful information in the book about serving amounts and preparation tips. The book, coupled with You Tube and Google searches will help you become a sushi pro.I made the rice according to the recipe and found it too acidic. A little research led me to decide to season the rice according to taste instead of using 1/2 cup.I also learned to let the rice cool and sit for about 15 minutes before using it. Once I form a roll, I learned to let it sit before attempting to cut it. Letting it sit makes all the difference in the rice falling apart or sticking like glue.Good luck. This kit is a good place to start. And everything arrived intact and fresh. Well, one grain of rice was loose in the box but I will let that slide.4Great gift!I bought this as a Christmas gift for my boyfriend's parents last year. I included it with some miso soup packages, sesame seeds and a sushi plate set. I really like that it has the bamboo roller as I did a lot of research before making this purchase and read that those are much easier and more efficient for rolling sushi. This package was great and had basically everything, except I wish it included the sesame seeds for what it costs (or used to cost, I see it's about $10 less now). Although it was easy to pick up the seeds at my local grocery store, just an extra trip - which nobody likes. It shipped and arrived very timely and in great condition.I can't review on how well everything works as I haven't heard if they've actually made sushi yet, but it definitely looked nice and was very well received!4Maybe practice makes perfect?I love sushi and go out to local restaurants 1-2 times a week. So was excited to try at home. I did follow other reviewers' advice and watched UTube videos which helped a lot!First try was OK. Way too sweet and vinegary for me. So second attempt I cut the sushi vinegar to 2/3 and rest regular rice vinegar. Still a little much for my taste. Will decrease some more next time.Wrappers came folded up and cracked when unfolded. I recommend trying to straighten them out in the plastic cover for a day.All in all, it's a fun thing to do at home. But the resturant tastes way way better so far.3He's spent several days since in the kitchen wearing his coat and making sushi that my family agrees is just as good as restauraI got this one for my dad. He's been very obsessed with sushi lately and this Christmas we got him this with a chef coat. He's spent several days since in the kitchen wearing his coat and making sushi that my family agrees is just as good as restaurant sushi and very fun to make. It's true that eventually you run out of the pickled ginger and such, but there are a few tools in the kit you can use for a long time, as well as a booklet on how to make a lot of different sushi rolls. This is not sushi making for pros, but if you want to learn to make sushi for the first time this is a great way to start.5Made a great giftI bought this as a gift for my husband. It came within two days and was packaged well. He was very excited to use it and wasn't disappointed. The price tag is slightly higher than other kits for sale, but when you factor in the cost for the rice, seaweed (nori), ginger, wasabi, sushi vinegar, regular rice vinegar and soy sauce this is the better deal. For people making sushi for the very first time it is much less daunting only having to purchase the fish and vegetables from the grocery. Plus there will be plenty of food left over from the kit unless you plan cooking for 10+ people. The booklet came with instructions that were pretty easy to follow. The photo included was my husbands very first try. Aside from the rice I dropped on it I felt it came out looking very professional! I recommend!5
