Cut Coffee Beans to Half, Then Add Scoop into GrinderUsing half as much coffee beans as before, I add a heaping tablespoon of this Chicory Root right into my Krups bean grinder and grind all together, just before brew time. It's already grounded and brew-ready, if you buy coffee already ground. This is stronger than coffee (ounce for ounce) so go easy with this. I also buy-use 100% Whole Bean Colombian Swiss Water Processed (SWP) Decaf Fresh Roasted Coffee. Add several drops of NOW Foods Better Stevia Liquid (8oz bottles are the best deal), and then some non-fat dry milk, and it's a peaceful morning. Web search the health benefits of chicory root.5Pleasantly surprised by the taste!This is NOT coffee, BUT if you drink your coffee with sugar and creamer, then you will be satisfied! It smells great straight out of the bag!I bought this solely as a coffee substitute not an add-in as my husband and I are trying to go a month without caffeine and see how we feel! I missed the comfort of the warm coffee taste in the mornings. I do not drink my coffee black and did not figure that I would enjoy this black either. I had to grind these granules up in my blender and I brewed a single cup using 1 tsp ground chicory and I honestly thought it tasted better than black coffee, but still not particularly "enjoyable".....I then added my usual non dairy creamer and stevia and was blown away by how delicious it was! Gave me just what I needed! I brewed my husband a cup with 1 1/2 tsp chicory because he likes his coffee a bit stronger - he thought it was bitter plain(he drinks his coffee black) but not overall not bad. He added in a smaller amount of creamer and stevia and was also impressed! VERY pleased so far with this product!5... first you need to know this is not instant like Sanka, it is more like a loose leaf ...Ok first you need to know this is not instant like Sanka, it is more like a loose leaf tea....directions make it sound like you can just disolve in your hot water... once past that the taste is spot on for those who like chicory or need an alterantive to coffee :) I use a tea infuser and it is perfect!!4BEWARE OF POSSIBLE CHEMICALS FROM NON ORGANIC PRODUCTI rarely ever leave negative reviews, because I am a small business owner myself. I did a LOT of research on the roasted chicory root, before making a decision, and ended up ordering from Starwest because I really love this brand in general. When I opened up the bag, I took a deep smell-there is something in here that caused a big headache. I added in a tablespoon with my morning coffee--and I drank half a cup and got a headache. Being a practitioner of energy medicine, I was able to muscle test (or energy measure) that my body was reacting to some kind of chemical used either during processing; or perhaps during growth or production. You really don't know what chemicals could have been using during the lifespan of this plant, or processing. I use chicory root powder daily so I know I'm not sensitive to chicory root itself-the muscle testing indicated it was sensitivity to a chemical (not chicory root). I believe it's best to go with ORGANIC from a trusted company. I am also not able to return this item, so it was definitely a waste of money. Maybe someone who isn't sensitive can have this product, ,but it's definitely not for me. I should have ordered the FRONTIER organic chicory root. If the seller offers me money back, I will take my review down, but for now, I wanted to give my honest opinion of this product.1fun to experiment, plus health benefits!Doesn't taste bad at all. Some of this chicory brewed along with organic coffee seems to suddenly be keeping me "regular" without having to choke down all those other fibers and herbs.I noticed that there was a lot of brown still soaking out of the chicory, when I washed the French press after brewing chicory and coffee grounds together. Never one to *waste* stuff, I want to try to get the most out of it :)Now experimenting with soaking some of the chicory in boiling water, to add later to weak coffee...5Too bitterGreat deal in price per weight, but this chicory was by Far the most bitter of other brands I've tried. I cut back on amount, but it was still bitter. It's also extremely light in color in comparison to other brands, this was the color of instant coffee instead of a dark roast. My mama grew up in the depression, and she told me once, "I'd better not hear about you drinking that coffee with Chickory!" Of course, I had to try it after that. Well, when I visited friends in New Orleans, They served coffee with chickory, and it was WONDERFUL! This is the first time I'd bought just the ground Chickory Root; previously I'd only had coffee that came with the root mixed into the blend at the factory. THIS makes Tremendous Coffee! Yay!5Good stuff, fresh, but not as toasty as the stuff in New OrleansBought this for my BFF as a Christmas present. She often makes trips to New Orleans and has mentioned several times how much she likes the coffee there because many places serve it with Chicory in it. I wanted to get her some but didn't have a clue what to get. The only thing I knew for sure was that I wanted to get something that she could add to her own choice of coffee, not coffee that already had chicory in it, that way she could control the amount she added to her brew. After some research and reading tons of reviews on many products, I decided on this one and it did NOT disappoint!!According to my BFF this was very much like what she was used to in New Orleans. There's plenty in the bag and even after almost 2 months (she got it early) there's plenty left. The packaging is a foil/mylar, resealable bag to maintain freshness, that was a big + according to her, she thought about getting another canister with a good rubber seal but she said the pouch it came in seals so well that she didn't need to. The product inside the package when it was first opened was very fresh and has retained that freshness so far. As for the taste, according to her it is very nice and pleasant, although, not as "toasty" as some others that she has had. I assume she was referring to the flavor from the roasting of the chicory, this could be due to the coffee she was mixing it with, but she likes it very much and it was a hit.So all in all, great taste, although not as "toasty" as some others. Reminiscent of New Orleans coffee house coffee. Great resealable, flavor preserving packaging to maintain freshness. I know some people drink just chicory as a substitute for coffee rather than adding a small amount to coffee so depending on which way you use this and how much you drink, it could last you a long time. I personally can't vouch for the flavor, but I know she's drinking it so it can't be all that bad ;)5Definitely recommend, and is a nice coffee substitute!This is some great stuff! Took me awhile to decide I like it, and to figure out how best to use it. It's my evening (decaf) "coffee" and is a great drink that I use to fill me up, warm the "collywobbles" and reduce my tendency towards evening snacking. I have a large mug, and either use a filter or tea ball (anything you have on hand for filtering loose tea leaves would work). I pour hot water over it, and let it steep for a few minutes, then remove the filter and enjoy! It as a rich coffee-ish flavor and is a wonderful evening drink. My only concern, given the amount I consume, would be whether there are many/any chemicals used in producing this. Given the availability or opportunity, I would try to purchase organic next time. It's also my understanding that there are some good health benefits to chicory root, including the presence of inulin. Not sure if that applies here, but hey, I'll take it!5I was amazed. It has actually helped to improve my digestive ...My brother actually sent me this chickory as a birthday gift. He kept telling me how it helps digestive issues and when blended with coffee reduces acid. I thank him every day. I no longer start my morning on acid overload. I mix 25% of this chicory when I brew my coffee and now can drink 2-3 cups where I used to only be able to tolerate one. I thank my brother every day for this gift of heath. When I read about the digestive benefits of chickory, I was amazed. It has actually helped to improve my digestive system.5
