Great Customer service!!Great Customer service!! With all the stuff going on in the world, I decided to put together an emergency bag with medical supplies and other stuff and this is one small piece of it. There was a small glitch in my order. I contacted customer service (easy to get ahold of) and they promptly took care of it and sent me out a replacement. Hard to find good customer service these days but this is one. The splint was as described and I'm satisfied with my purchase. 5Three brands of "SAMS" comparedI just bought three different SAM-type splints on Amazon and they seem comparable:(a) SAM brand, $13.49, Made in USA(b) Everready 4.25 X 36 Inch Padded Aluminum Splint, $6.16, Made in China(c) Dixie 4.25 X 36 Inch Padded Aluminum Splint, $5.87, Made in ChinaAs far as stiffness goes, they are all about as stiff and to me, the SAM seems to be the limpest of them all.They weigh different amounts, could be foam weight, could be aluminum weight, could be both. In same order as above, weights are:(a) 123g(b) 149g(c) 140gThe only big difference I see, besides instructions printed on the splint, is smell.(a) No smell(b) Slight petrochem smell(c) Slight petrochem smell.B and c come folded. I smoothed them out and rolled them just like the SAM brand. The fact that they were folded did not seem to affect my ability to roll them or form splints into desired shapes. 5Must have for your medical kitSAM Splints are a staple of just about any medical kit. Personally, I am familiar with them from my search and rescue days in the military. We carried them in our medical kit, and in stepping up my personal kit, I decided to add one. SAM Splints are the most versatile splint for use in the field or in a crisis situation where you absolutely need something that you can customize, shorten, twist, bend, etc. These can splint pretty much every bone, joint, are of the body including use as a neck collar. There are not enough good things that I can say about these splints. I m an Emt and keep my own pack in my personal truck (just in case) and used it on a trip and fall off an rv roof last week. Held his broken arm nicely and even between his painful scream and tears he briefly mentioned how cool the SAM was then continued to scream and cry. 5Temporary, which is goodSome people reviewed this and complained that it was too flimsy. I know it is for what it is, not a permanent thing, but a temporary thing, a thing to hold the injured area as straight as possible until you get to an area where something more sturdy is provided. Better than nothing, better than having to make a rudimentary lathe (ha ha, "Galaxy quest"), or cutting numerous branches or twigs to make a dirty, bark-crumbly, make-shift splint. while you're weaving twine from grass and moss to hold the sticks on. 5A must for any trauma kitThese are great, you should have one on hand for your camping medical bag or even at home. Stabilizing a fracture is important to prevent further tissue damage and also helps with pain. The SAM splint is easy to use and versatile so a must have for my medical kits. Much better than using a tree limb or flimsy cardboard. 5What good is a trauma bag without a splint.If you sustain an injury and need some emergency splinting, you don't have too many options.The blowup air splints are nice but they're extremely expensive and are specific for one type of injury. You can get a lower leg one, a wrist one, a full leg, and ankle, Too many options. And, if you have an injury you really just want to immobilize it to you can get to the hospital.This one is fine. It'll accomplish relative immobilization of any limb. Long enough to help. Not so stiff as to work as a cure but it will alleviate some motion.It fits in my trauma bag. Well priced. Well packaged. Just what you need 5Hard to review a product you've never usedI bought my SAM splint for first aid backpacking. Luckily, no one in my group has so much as gotten a bad ankle sprain, so I'm still waiting for the opportunity to try it out. It's really hard to say how well a splint will work without actually having someone injured to use it on. After all, there's a *big* difference between just strapping this thing on your leg when you're hale and hardy, and trying to imagine what it would be like if you had a horrendous strain or a fracture.That being said, I do think the splint will do it's job if it's ever called to. It seems reasonably stiff when bent, and it's moldable to various body parts and shapes. My extremely unscientific experiments on myself confirms that this is, in every possible way, superior to my previous "sticks and bandanna" or "hiking poles and bandanna" splints, which, if I'm being honest, are pretty terrible.One thing I do like about this is that it's very easy to get out of the way in pack. I just fold it in half length-wise and shove it in my water-bladder pouch. That way I always know exactly where it is in case I do need it. 5It looked like a pretty good fractureI have a first aid certification, and a first responder level healthcare provider certification. I'm also a volunteer firefighter. My grandfather fell one Sunday morning, and before picking him up, I noticed a deformity in his wrist. It looked like a pretty good fracture, and it turned out that it was. I keep a sam splint in my first aid kit, and I made a wrist splint out of it and wrapped it in cohesive tape. It worked flawlessly. I'm sure any EMT who has used a sam splint would tell you that it is a great thing to keep in a first aid kit. Immobilizing fractures is extremely important. the sooner the better. Definitely pick one up. they're re-usable too. 5
