Most usably comfortableThis is the 4th different brace I've purchased for relief of arthritis in the thumb basal joint and is far and away the best. not only does is provide relief it is also the one that is the most comfortable for the longest amount of time AND allows me enough flexibility to use the keyboard and mouse at work with minimal issues. I bought both the size 1 and 2. Neither size was a perfect fit. The thumb cage on 1 felt best but the straps on 2 fit better. I decided to keep the size 1 and the seller promptly refunded the 2 on return. I may go back and get one for my other hand. It's very expensive but I consider it worth it as long as it holds up. Too soon to tell on that yet for me. 5Life Changer! Finally. I've had custom made thick casts made for my CMC joint for 10 years @ $200+ each, every other year by the top hand surgeon in my city. This little gem (referred to me by my cast maker at the hand center) will cancel all future orders of the custom made one because I'm using this PUSH brace forever. My CMC joint is not just sore or weak, it's actually dislocated (from a sports injury and now arthritic) and this brace is my new thumb! In fact, it let's me use my thumb again instead of immobilizing it in a big ugly thing (which doctor ordered for night time and activities). So it's getting exercise!See your doctor or therapist, but I do have some suggestions. The small #1 size fits my joint like a glove and keeps it very stable. However, I wear it 23/7 (for 2 months now). Looks plastic but seems bulletproof lol. Shower in it!! Very important & maybe merchant can offer options. Since I wear it so much, even with a thin layer of foam bandage under it, I've developed a nasty, "grade 2" pressure ulcer under it right where outside of bone hits it. Now lining it with cosmetic foam pads (feels sooo good) and got some cast liner on the way. So be warned! Remove every so often to wiggle and keep thumb elastic. I've just ordered a larger size so i can put all this foam inside it like a cast so might consider that. For us long-termers - the worst spot is the web tween thumb and forefinger. REALLY needs foam there. Foam doesn't wash well so maybe merchant can sell custom cut pieces that fit this brace!! If you only need it part-time, it's very comfy on it's own - just don't pull it too tight - but needs to be tight enough to stabilize the CMC joint.80% of my daily pain is GONE and the severe pain from my bone spur on the top of my hand near my thumb is 100% gone. Highly recommend this brand PUSH over similar ones. Good Luck.. and THANK YOU, PUSH!!! (Yeah, yeah, I'll get the surgery one day, got good reasons right now to wait til I can't use it anymore at all) :) Happy Patient. 5osteo-arthritis relief!I developed osteo-arthritis at the base of my right thumb. It got steadily worse (before diagnosis) to the point that I could not turn a door knob, open a can with an opener, or open a jar. PT helped gain strength back to a great degree. When I went to an hand specialist (after x-ray, etc.) she told me I was a candidate for surgery but that there was new brace that would help me. And help it did! It keeps the trapezium joint from sliding across the metacarpal causing searing pain. The first time I understood how good this brace is ~ I began to open a can with a manual can opener and immediately felt that pain. I stopped, put the brace on, continued opening the can with no pain! It is quite comfortable. I wear it at the sewing machine and working around the house. It can pinch when driving and pushing shopping carts ~ just takes some getting used to. Much less bulky and cumbersome than other braces I have tried and I have tried a lot of them! 5It worksI admit, it took me awhile to buy this. It was merely because of sticker shock. However, it's the best money I have spent. I have terrible pain in my left thumb joint (CMC) and this brace has helped enormously! The hard shell protects the joint from being injured. I wear this 24/7 and only remove it when I shower. It doesn't detract from using my hand in any way. I quilt, do housework, walk dogs, type, etc. The only thing that isn't easy is if I need to write (I'm a lefty). I do have to remove it for that as it can be awkward holding a pen. Some of the reviewers mentioned that the velcro stops working? I haven't had any issues with that.Eventually, I will probably need one for my right hand. I won't hesitate to get another one. 5Investment in Comfort! These braces have allowed me to keep working with a minimal amount of pain and aggravation of thumb arthritis. I work in a veterinary hospital and one of my braces is going on nearly a year of 36 hour work weeks and many many hand washings and exposures to harsh disinfecting products and it looks and functions great. So many clients ask me about them. It's super simple to put exam gloves on over these too! Well worth the $$$. 5Brace is good, but failing velcro straps make it not worth the costThis is actually a decent brace for basal joint arthritis (I have basal joint arthritis in my right thumb which has progressively gotten worse over the years), but the velcro straps make it almost unusable unless you don't do anything at all with your hand. I had the original one which had velcro attachment straps that become like two pieces of silk after just weeks of use. I mean they wouldn't stay together at all, not even for a second, so the brace was completely worthless in less than a couple of months. To the company's credit, they sent me a replacement which had "new and improved straps" since they say they had a bad batch of straps during the manufacturing process of my original brace. Well, the new straps were an improvement, but they probably lasted twice as long before they became worthless, in other words, about 4 months. For such an expensive brace, you would appropriately expect that they are using the highest quality products available to manufacture their brace, but the fact that such a fundamental and easy thing to fix like a velcro strap would elude this company for years is just bizarre. During the third month of the SECOND brace, I noticed that the velcro straps would pop off occasionally (meaning they just came apart when you reached for something, not because something pulled on the top part of the velcro). This started to occur more often, then it became common and now I pretty much don't use the brace since the straps just constantly fail.Even though the brace itself works well for basal joint arthritis, and is better than the dozen plus other braces I have used, I would definitely NOT recommend this product since they apparently haven't gotten velcro figured out yet, and are content selling braces they know will fail in a short period of time. If you have cash for a disposable brace that lasts 4-5 months, then I probably would recommend it. 2Compared FLA 3D Adjustable Thumb Brace to Push MetaGrip CMC Thumb BraceI have Basal Thumb Arthritis, and my physical therapist said to try a brace that isolates the First Carpometacarpal (CMC) joint for pain relief. Pain comes from twisting jar tops, holding coffee cup, holding iPhone in landscape, and most of all pinching seeds to sew in flats.I tried both the FLA and Push braces for under 2 weeks. My left-hand experiences more pain than the right and had the Push, while the right hand is dominant and had the FLA. I am a very active gardener planting, digging, raking, moving pots and more. I work at this for 6 hours per day. The FLA took more abuse because it s on the dominant hand, and because there is a metal frame that extends across the palm. In the pictures, there is staining on the FLA from dirt that migrated through my gardening gloves. There is metal showing where the FLA is damaged from pushing with the right hand; the brace catches much of that contact since it crosses the palm. The FLA did not interfere with gardening, wish I had that type of padding in my gloves, not my orthosis brace though. I did not like the FLA brace across my palm for other activities. It was hard to write and type for example.FLA cost $45, free shipping, arrived fastest. Push cost $104 with shipping, arrived in about 3 days.Even though I felts some pain relief from using the FLA, I decided to return the FLA after a week s use. The reason is the one I received was defective. The small Velcro strap that holds the thumb, the most important strap on the device, started failing after 5 days. First it took on a wrinkle in the hook material, then the loop material came off its backing. I washed it daily in cold water and mild hand soap, and air dried it.I do not think the FLA isolated my CMC joint. The instructions do not address pinching the aluminum to fit closely around your thumb joint. This is necessary to restrain the joint. You cannot tighten the joint with the Velcro strap, the ergonomics and strength of the metal prevent that approach. The instructions recommend a doctor or medical Professional perform the metal bending adjustment. My physical therapist would not due to a significant preference for the Push design. The price is significantly less than the Push, but economy matters only if the device does its job and endures. The Push is rigid only at the CMC joint. The strap across the hand is soft and does not interfere with most tasks. Though on my non-dominant hand, I use my left hand for many task gardening, and the Push showed no wear and tear. I experienced SIGNIFICANT PAIN RELIEF using the Push orthotic. It did a good job isolating my CMC joint, and I had almost immediate relief. After a week, I had some pain return, but my physical therapist helped me make some subtle strapping adjustments and recommended frequent removal to dry the skin and orthosis when working to ensure a good fit.The Push instructions are complete regarding fitting the orthosis to isolate the CMC joint. I wish picture 7 was clearer about tightening the metal ring around the joint, but my physical therapist said I needed no additional adjustment. 5Great for swimming with arthritis in your thumb jointI hardly ever write reviews but this product has been so helpful to me. I have arthritis below both thumbs but I love to swim for fitness. Although swimming is good for many types of arthritis, it really exacerbates the pain in my hands (from pulling through the water). Before using these thumb braces, the pain would keep me up at night and all day I would find myself pressing into my hand to try to relieve the pain. Now, I hardly have any pain. I swim a mile about 4 x per week. The straps do eventually wear out but they usually last about a year, which I think is good for something that I wear swimming so often. I keep them in my swim bag so they put up with staying in a wet environment almost all the time. 5Pretty Expensive Fail.I bought this item less than a year ago. It worked pretty well, but within a few months the straps lost their grip it wouldn't stay on.Ya kind of have to jump through some hoops to get to the correct customer service, then make sure you call before 5:00 pm EST, and spend some time on the phone to get it replaced. They did replace it, but the replacement's straps have also failed now, and I'm back to chasing down customer service about the second fail.Same canned email reply both times, which leads me to believe they have not yet corrected the issue of the straps. They say its a small percentage of braces that fail, but both of mine have, as have the ones purchase by 2 people I know. Can't say I'd purchase this product or recommend it after my experiences. 2Happy sailor!I bought this Push thumb brace nearly a year ago after I had mentioned to my orthopedic Dr about the increased pain and weakness in my left hand/thumb. An X-ray showed mild to moderate arthritis at the base of the thumb. My Dr recommended this product so as to delay or avoid surgery. I was reluctant to purchase the product as the price was fairly high - I was concerned about proper fit and I don't trust velcro closures for repeated, daily applications. An injection into the joint didn't help much so I took the plunge.I have worn the brace daily for the last 11 months. Altho I am retired, I am involved in a large, complex wood boat restoration project that involves much physical activity including using both hands for power tools, hand tools and heavy equipment. Lifting, pushing, pulling - any type of grasping you can imagine - every day/all day. There is minor restriction of movement but I am able to do what I need to do to keep moving along - including typing this review. The brace is pretty well beat up now, as you can imagine, but has worked well for me! Else wise, why would I continue to wear it? One end of the metal band is breaking thru the hard plastic base in the palm. The straps are stretched. It looks pretty bad. I take extra care with the velcro closure straps - no sudden yanking open. Slow and steady pulling can help delay the inevitable failure of the hook and loop material. I am about to purchase a new one - the old one is still working well but looks a fright and the other folks who sit near me when I attend the opera are beginning to gossip. ;) 5
