A Female PerspectiveI am a female with an inguinal hernia (rare, I know). I should have let my husband move the bed...oh well...I am 5'9", 124lbs, and wear a size 0-2 pant. I bought the small and it fits well. I think I may have even been able to buy a medium and had it still work fine.This belt does a great job of holding the hernia in. It has brought a lot of peace of mind that I am not going to make the hernia worse. I have a nine-month-old baby, so I don't want to rush off to get surgery due to lifting requirements, etc. I have started doing ab workouts and have noticed that the hernia struggles more to come out compared to how it used to just pop back out. I have heard these can heal themselves, so I am hopeful!The belt took about a week for me to get used to wearing. The strap that goes under the leg chafes against my skin a little, even when wearing boyshort style underwear. It also slides up on my hip often. Using the restroom has been an adventure. I can't sleep in it because I am a tummy sleeper and it is uncomfortable, plus the rubber piece that holds the hernia in pops out. Wearing shorts and pants hides it well; I think someone would have to look pretty close to be able to tell I am wearing it, so that's nice.Overall, I don't know how there could be any design changes to make it more comfortable for a female. The hernia just is what it is, so I'm grateful for the belt. 4HEADS UP GUYS The double has a major design flawI ended up purchasing the left-sided model after also trying the double support model. At first (before I actually received the double) it made more sense to wear the double-sided version for better balance while wearing it, making it more comfortable with equalized pressure on both sides. However, when it arrived I was shocked to find that there was only 1 tightening strap and it was on the right. My hernia is on the LEFT, and there is no way to get the same support and customized super-tight pull on the left as I do with the left-side model which I am rating a strong 4. I can already tell the left-side model is going to lose its tightening effect pretty soon, as that's just the way it goes with elastic anything. But in the meantime, the quality and sturdiness of this support is straight up old school. It works as good as anything could for this purpose. I would definitely NOT recommend the double-sided support UNLESS you really do have a double inguinal hernia. If so, then go for it (but your left side will noticeably get LESS support). 4Worked well for me!I'm a distance runner and was having some serious pain in the abs and groin after I ran. Come to find out its a small (5mm) inguinal tear. My dilemma was this...I had a half marathon in 1 month, but the orthopedist that was recommended to me is booked up for 6-7weeks. I purchased this product to see if it would allow me to train while waiting to see the doctor.My waist: 33"My hips: 39"The medium size fits absolutely PERFECT!Pros: adds support perfectly over the inguinal area and can be adjusted up/down/side-to-side within 1/2" or so. I was able to run/stretch with it and it reduced the pain I felt post-run. Nice material, strong velcro, and pretty comfortable.Cons: the only draw back I had (thus the 4 stars) was the croctch strap pushed on my pubic bone and it felt bruised for a few days. To avoid this, I don't wear it at night, and use it in 3-4hr shifts during the day.I ran that half marathon...got a personal best! 4It does what it's supposed to do but long term ...It does what it's supposed to do but long term heavy use is putting is having a toll on it mainly with the velcro strips. I wear it 14-16hrs a day and I'm a metal fabicator so I'm probably a little harder on it then most people. Anyways would I buy it again? Definitely, it's a life saver! Without it I'm basically reduced to a little girl crying on the floor holding my nuts. Hope this helps. Update; post surgery I've had a little discomfort especially as the day goes on so I decided to give the belt another try, with the removable pad in it was too much but with it removed it offered just the right amount of support to get me through my normal work day which requires a lot of heavy lifting and now that it's winter here in southern New England I have to bring buckets of coal into the house for heat and again I have no problems. A note to my first review. The question I had about the Velcro lasting was because the first belt I was shipped wasn't Uriel but some cheap Chinese knock off. The Uriel is the real deal just make sure it'll packaged correctly. I'm changing my rating to 5 stars. 5Well made, could be better designedThe belt is adequatly comfortable. My main complaint is that the adjustment range is small, especially for the strap that goes through the groin. This strap could have a larger adjustment range if the velcro was placed in the front, on top of the triangular pad, instead of in the back. It would also be easier to remove and put on that way. The belt part also doesn't have much of an adjustment range. My hips are 35 inches, so I bought a medium (which is supposed to accomodate 32-36 inch hips). Despite being closer to the upper range, I've got it about as tight as the velcro will allow.The foam pad is very bulky, which is probably the source of one reviewer's complaint. The rest of the belt is not that bulky, and I appreciate the solid construction. I'm using it without the foam, and it seems to hold my guts in place.In addition to being very thick, the provided foam insert can only be used with the curved side toward your body (unless you have a bilateral belt and swap foam pieces). This may be important - I've seen some claims that curved pads actually make a hernia worse, while flat pads may (with good nutrition and satisfactory BMI) actually allow healing. The evidence for healing is small and not well documented in the medical literature, which generally reports untreated hernias getting worse rather than better. If, like me, you'd like to avoid surgery (which can have many complications, including long term pain), you may be encouraged by the lack of nutritional or other guidance given to patients. I plan work my rear off to be in the vanishingly small percentage of people who recover without surgery. If you want a flat pad, you could probably make one out of some foam core graphic art board. 3I would buy it again.I was a bit hesitant about ordering this after some of the reviews but I am so glad I did purchase it. It is helping manage a right side inguinal hernia to the point I can make it through my 9 hour daily workday. I was only able to go about 4-5 hours before having to go lay down in bed for an hour to relax the hernia prior to this belt.The design is excellent for quality, comfort and size. This is very well made and exceeded my expectations for quality of material and craftsmanship. I have no issues with any part of it rubbing or irritating skin (and I have sensitive skin). The size has been no issue under my normal blue jeans or shorts. I highly doubt anyone could notice any change in body shape when wearing this under regular clothing.I typically wear a size 33W 32L (occasionally a 34/32) in blue jeans. For this belt, I ordered the medium size for a right side hernia. It fits perfectly!I can give it an adjustment to the waist belt or leg belt with strong Velcro that holds its position without issue all day. I would order this again before looking at any other hernia belt. 5I almost feel like I could get away with just wearing this for ...I know this is cliche but for real...I never bother writing reviews, although I depend on them heavily. Almost as much as I've depended on this belt --while I wait for my surgery. I got this because I had to move both my home and shop to a new building myself and do all the demo/reno on the new place PLUS another contracting gig for a month. All these things with a double hernia and no surgery date in the convenient future. This frickin' belt saved me. It WORKS! I almost feel like I could get away with just wearing this for the rest of my life instead of surgery. It's a perfect, smart design that just nails it and has great adjustability. I guess if I were to offer one criticism would be that the main belt rides low and can slip a bit low. It's annoying but easy to readjust and I suppose it's better than having your hernia belt show when your shirt accidentally goes up. Oh man, I'm going on too long but:TL;DR This low-tech design works absolutely perfectly and totally saved my ass when I needed it. That makes it the greatest value to boot. 5Helps a lot, still not like being healthy but as good as one can hope forI was diagnosed with what my doctor called a "large" inguinal hernia. I experienced significant discomfort and aching after standing for more than just 2 minutes or so, and other activities were out of the question. Even though I have a hernia on only one side, at the suggestion of another reviewer I got the double belt because it supposedly stays in place better.With Meditex belt I have much less hernia discomfort. I am able to stand, go for short walks, and even do some light to medium household chores like mowing the lawn or vacuuming. Even with the belt I have to limit the heavy activities, though, and I think the reviewer who said he was able to go on a canoeing trip and portage heavy canoes either has a much smaller hernia than I do or is a man of iron - or both! Most of us will not be able to do that, and shouldn't. Ask your doctor...This isn't perfect. During the day I have to adjust the belt, especially to relieve discomfort from excessive pressure from the pad on the abdomen at the hernia site. I still have to limit my physical activities. At the end of the day it still is a relief to take off the belt, lie in bed, and not have gravity pulling at me. Ultimately the only cure is surgery. But I think the Meditex does about as good a job as can be expected to get me through the day until I have the surgical repair.Sizing and construction: I wear size 36 pants, which may be a little loose depending on the brand of pants. My hips measured 38 inches, measured about 2 inches below the top of the hips (the iliac crest). I bought a the Meditex size large, and it seems to be the right choice. Construction seems very solid and I am not worried about breakage, which has been reported on other brands sold by Amazon.One funny note: when I visited the surgeon for a pre-op evaluation, I mentioned that I had ordered a hernia belt from Amazon. His reply: "I didn't know Amazon sold those! I'll have to tell my patients - they can save some money." 5This product is amazing. Wearing it allowed me to take a one-week ...This product is amazing. Wearing it allowed me to take a one-week vacation to the northeast, with lots of walking, with absolutely no discomfort. I had scheduled my hernia surgery for after this vacation. I was concerned about if my condition would limit the walking that I would be able to do, as I often would feel discomfort when standing for long time periods. My wife suggested that I try this type of product. I reluctantly ordered it and was so pleased with the results. Since I was unsure of the size, I first ordered large. The I realized that medium would be even better. Actually both were suitable. The moderate cost was well worth the benefit. Even my hernia surgeon was impressed.Update: I had the hernia surgery two weeks ago, and am feeling normal again. 5wasted money on thisI ordered a Medium size which is listed at 32-36 waist size. I am a 32 so was thinking it might be loose. Turns out this thing is made for people with flat butts, because I can barely get the thigh strap around my leg. It because too tight because of that and just causes my hernia more pain. I ve conitinued to work construction without it on light duty. Surgery soon.. wasted money on this. Should ve made that strap a few inches longer. 1
