Customer Reviews

Weak, Bland, BoringI enjoy coffee from Sumatra. I enjoy dark roast coffee. I enjoy whole bean coffee and grinding right before drinking in order to get the best flavor. This coffee ticks all those boxes, so you would think I'd love it. Unfortunately this coffee falls very short of being passable, and is sub-par to most of the generic beans you find in bulk bins at your local grocery store.I've tried different grinds, ratios, brew times, etc. and I just can't get a decent cup out of this. It's just a weak bodied coffee with no structure or tasting notes other than just a bit of char from the dark roast. I was so disappointed because I had high hopes for it based upon the reviews.1Solid product but 12oz not 16oz, shipping may cost as much as product, even with Prime. If you like coffees grown in volcanic soil, you will love Nicaraguan beans. Nice warm nutty & cocoa tones, smooth, low acidity and balanced caffeine. The beans are a bit darker than typical medium roast so I would call them more a dark medium roast. They are clean whole beans with no broken pieces or chaff which can be a problem with many small co-ops in Nicaragua because they do not monitor standards strictly like Costa Rica, Kona HI & Jamaica are known for. Got free two-day shipping with a three pack. Note: These are 12 oz bags not 16 oz, so consider that when pricing against comparable products. Buying a single bag was not cost effective because shipping cost as much as the coffee, even with Prime. Buyer be aware of what your buying and price it by the oz. Don Thomas has been hard to get, and this coffee is a suitable replacement until the other roasters are back online. However, if you have kept up with news, Arabica species are dying at a rate that will drive them to extinction this century unless we solve the fungi and climate change by cloning or tampering with the plants code. Robusto looks to become the predominant species soon. Enjoy while you can.3Stale Dark RoastI was sad to see another major corporation getting into the coffee roasting business, I just bought this to see Amazon's take on a single origin coffee and to get an idea of which direction they were trying to go with coffee roasting. They are clearly taking the low road. The beans were stale, and despite being called light roast, these would qualify as full-city+ (med-dark) by any quality roaster's standard. There was zero trace of the beans origin, in fact zero trace of any taste at all. Amazon, like Walmart or any other major retailer, is not focused on quality, so don't let the single origin tag fool you. If you're wanting to enjoy a quality cup of coffee, and experience a coffee's origin by taste, find a local roaster with a good reputation that can get you beans within a week of roasting.1Could Not Drink the SumatraI must admit, I am a coffee snob. I live in a small city and my choices in coffee are very limited so I decided to try ordering it. During my search I saw the Amazon brand of Sumatra at a reasonable price. I love a good cup of Sumatra and really don't drink anything else but Sumatra. I was excited to receive my order and give it a try. How disappointing! It is extremely bitter with no flavor at all. Mostly I am disappointed in Amazon to offer such a poor product with their name on it. So now I sit with 2 bags of beans that I will not use. I can get better coffee at Walmart than this product. If you really care about your coffee, don't buy this. If you like your coffee burnt with lots of cream and sugar, this might work for you.2Good bean for the costI am going to review this bean as it tastes by brewing method to try to get the different flavors profiles. For the most part I drink my drinks with heavy cream (sometimes called double cream). The reasoning for this is I want the fat in the cream to hold the flavor of the coffee on my tongue long. As a side effects it does mellow out the acidity of the bean. I coming off of a Guatemala roast to order bean (boca java Guatemalan adventure) so that's what I been having the past week.As an caff crema (expresso shot and heavy cream) :Taste mild acidity, complex, medium body, chocolate. As an americano with heavy cream:Taste comes out to be low acidity, juice, a well rounded body, hints of chocolate.Beans where not oily which is to be expected from not being a dark roast.I for the most part the description of the coffee of juice, complex, and notes of chocolate are accurate depending on brewing method used. I will give a try as a poor over method later and update.Package has experation date though sadly no roast date added. You can see some of the images attached to see bean, packaging, and crema.5Rwanda Light Roast Worth the PriceFirst impression: This whole bean coffee came with a Best By date of 6 months from now, instead of a Roasted On date. Coffee should be brewed freshly roasted, not sitting in a warehouse for months. Who knows when this was roasted? This industry standard needs to change. This is, indeed, a light -er roast. Probably roasted between 9 1/2-10 1/2 minutes. Not oily, no hint of roasty aroma. Smells like coffee, not a fire pit.I brewed this on my Bonavita 1800. 40grams coffee, ground for drip, 640ml filtered water. Not much evidence of degassing during the bloom (see dating comment above).Coffee aromas of tangerine and roasted almond. Nice full body/mouth feel and slightly dry finish. Tastes savory and floral, leather and hibiscus and a caramel sweetness. The flavors are not clean and they are slightly muted overall. This coffee is balanced and unimposing. At the current price, this is right in line with most store bought brands. Yet, I cannot find enough decent first-crack coffees at the store to keep my interest. As well, I m not always interested in paying the local roasters whole bean price for my morning brew. This coffee is a great compromise of quality and price. Distinct enough to enjoy but budget friendly. This coffee is well worth the price for anyone looking for a cost-effective online coffee option.4The worst Sumatran beans I've ever had, by far. If you like coffee, don't buy this!I am fairly knowledgable about coffee. I buy fresh beans. I grind them and brew immediately. Sumatran coffee is my favorite. I've tried many different brands and this is the absolute worst by far. I am so disappointed because Amazon usually has quality products. This coffee is not drinkable. When I first bought it last fall, I was shocked at the horrible flavor. I tried mixing it with another Sumatran coffee hoping that it might be better. Nope. The mix of the two was undrinkable, too. I went back to my usual brews. A few weeks ago, I opened the second bag. Still horrible. Today I decided to give the third, and last, bag a try. I bought three bags at the same time because they sell it as a pack of three. Maybe the third bag would be better than the first? No such luck. This bag is undrinkable, too. If I hadn't waited so long to try the last bag, I'd be asking for my money back.1Poor quality controlThe first two bags of this were delicious, and this would have been a 5 star review if it weren't for the third bag. The roasting/packaging quality control seems to be very hit or miss, as the third bag was awful. I opened it up and first noticed a smell that can best be described as dry black-eyed peas. I figured I'd give it a try anyway, though, as sometimes the smell is different than what you taste (the Sumatran is a good example).I shouldn't have done it. The coffee smelled and tasted like boiled dirt, and that's not an exaggeration. I've had bad coffee before, but it still tasted like coffee.tl;dr: If you want to roll the dice, I'd buy it, as when it's roasted right it's really good.3Amazon conquers one cup at a timeFirst let me state I am not a huge coffee connoisseur, but there are definitely better and worse cups to be found. This produces a fine cup for me, is well priced and is fairly traded. I'll certainly order some more.5Bitter (not the good kind)I typically purchase coffee from Roseline or other New Orleans local roasters. I always purchase whole bean and think I have a somewhat discerning palate. I am not a fan of this coffee. It has an odd bitterness and none of the good aromas or acids you want from a coffee. Additionally, this coffee is more of a medium roast IMO.1
